alexandersummitContinuing his support of recent years, U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., has co-sponsored a resolution that designates Oct. 30 as the National Day of Remembrance honoring those who worked in the nation’s nuclear weapons program during the Cold War.

Here’s a quote from Tennessee’s senior senator:

“At the peak of the Cold War, nearly 600,000 workers across the country were involved in the research and production of nuclear weapons. Thousands of Tennesseans worked with hazardous materials to build and maintain our nation’s nuclear defense. On this day of remembrance, we honor these Tennesseans and those around the country who have quietly sacrificed for our safety and freedom.”

The Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge has produced parts for every nuclear weapon in the U.S. arsenal.
